Minibus Project

Finley R. Shapiro, now the principal consultant at Finley Shapiro Consulting, Inc., organized and led a project to improve and study a 16-passenger battery powered minibus. The minibus was built in England and donated to Drexel University by the Pennsylvania Energy Office. When it was received, the minibus was not roadworthy.

The work included making improvements so that the minibus could be driven on public streets, and the design and implementation of an on-board computer system to monitor vehicle's energy consumption. Two Drexel graduate student and four undergraduate students also participated the project.

Once the vehicle could be driven, it was used for weekly deliveries of food to home-bound AIDS patients, for demonstration rides, and for educational purposes. By the end of the project the minibus had been driven over 700 miles on public streets in Philadelphia and its suburbs, including one trip to Camden, New Jersey.
